Today's April 15th, the deadline to pay taxes. While most people understand the necessity of taxation (I'd hope), it is not unusual for one to get angry at the thought of giving up so much of one's own money. But how many people are angry enough that they'd teabag another person over economic policy? The answer may surpise you.
So, what is teabagging? According to urbandictionary.com, the word "teabag" refers to the act of inserting one's scrotum into the mouth of another person, often someone who is sleeping or passed out. (I've also heard that a "teabag" can be defined as a pouch of herbs that when placed in water produces a flavored beverage, but who would ever use it in that context?) With this slang definition in mind, one thing becomes painfully obvious: Anyone who refers to themself as a teabagger probably won't be taken seriously. Then again, some people's views are hard to take seriously to begin with. A great example of this Tea Party Movement. Here's the best description of the movement I could find (by which I mean the one with the most double-entendres):
So there you have it. A bunch of people led by conservative groups are planning to protest government spending by imitating the Boston Tea Party, an event whose participants were trying to promote the idea of following the laws set forth by one's own representatives, rather than a foreign government. Considering that the Democratic majority was elected months ago by the people and for the people, and that much of America's budget is being wasted on Republican-initiated wars, wouldn't the philosophy closest to that of the original Tea Party protestors be to support the Democrats?
Edit by Rebecca: Here is my favorite video on teabagging.
Edit by Rebecca: The video has been taken down, but trust me, it was awesome.

Hey, you better take them seriously, or they might send you a TEABAG FAX!
ReplyDeleteI edited your post to add my personal favorite video. If you haven't seen this one yet, do.
ReplyDeleteWow! Everyone seems to want to blog about this seminal protest. Who would've thought that teabagging was so seductive?
ReplyDeleteAnderson Cooper made a comment about it, too - in response to "They still haven’t found their voice, Anderson. This happens to a minority party after it’s lost a couple of bad elections, but they’re searching for their voice," he commented, "It’s hard to talk when you’re teabagging."

The only thing that could've made this any funnier would be if the protests were directed against the leaders of the previous administration. I can see the headlines now: "Bush and Dick Rubbed the Wrong Way by Teabaggers."
